GeoDesign led a team of consultants which evaluated, permitted, designed and oversaw the in-situ closure of a former firewater storage pond. The pond was formerly used for the storage of fire control water for a chemical manufacturing facility. Services included extensive sediment characterization sampling and analyses for volume estimation, ecological assessment and geotechnical assessment to demonstrate the feasibility of in-situ closure. We prepared municipal, state and federal permit applications for the bypass of off-site storm water and closure/capping of the 1.4 acre pond. We provided an extensive engineering closure feasibility and geotechnical assessment of the organic sludge, development of construction specifications and contractor bid evaluations, construction monitoring and Construction Quality Assurance oversight of the owner’s contractor during the construction activities and an on-going settlement monitoring to evaluate the rate and extent of sediment/sludge consolidation.
